Walk-In Chiller & Freezer New Zealand | Cold Room Guide, Sizes & PricesLooking for a walk-in chiller or freezer in New Zealand?
Choosing the right cold room depends on what you need to store, the required temperature, room size, insulation and refrigeration system.
At Freezing Valley Refrigeration, we supply walk-in chillers, walk-in freezers and commercial refrigeration equipment for businesses, farms, restaurants, butcher shops, supermarkets, food processing and hunting applications throughout New Zealand.
The first question is simple: What are you planning to store?
| Application | Recommended Temperature |
|---|---|
| Fresh meat, fish, dairy & produce | +1°C to +5°C – Chiller |
| Frozen meat, seafood & ice cream | -18°C or lower – Freezer |
| Game meat / hunting storage | Around +2°C Chiller or -20°C Freezer |
For meat processing or seasonal hunting, a walk-in chiller provides a clean, temperature-controlled space for hanging, cooling and ageing meat.
If you need longer-term frozen storage, a walk-in freezer is generally the better option.
Before choosing the size of your walk-in chiller or freezer, consider:
• Storage volume: How much product will you need to store at peak times?
• Door openings: Frequent opening increases the refrigeration load.
• Shelving & racks: Allow enough space for good airflow around stored products.
• Available space: Measure the installation area carefully before ordering.
• Future requirements: Consider whether your storage requirements may increase.
Cold rooms can range from compact units for small businesses to large commercial rooms such as 6m × 8m or larger, depending on the application.
Walk-in chillers and freezers are normally constructed from polyurethane (PU) insulated sandwich panels.
Typical insulation thickness:
• Chiller: 75mm–100mm
• Freezer: 100mm–150mm
Depending on the cold room configuration, components can include:
• Insulated wall and ceiling panels
• Insulated flooring, particularly for freezer applications
• Hinged or sliding insulated cold room door
• Non-slip aluminium or stainless-steel flooring
• Interior LED lighting
• Optional PVC strip curtains
Correct insulation helps maintain a stable temperature and reduces unnecessary refrigeration load.
There are two main refrigeration system options for walk-in cold rooms.
A monoblock is an all-in-one refrigeration system combining the main refrigeration components into one compact unit.
Advantages include:
• Simple installation
• Compact design
• Suitable for many small and medium cold rooms
• Less refrigeration pipework required
• Quick setup
One important consideration is that the condenser releases heat. If the monoblock is installed indoors, make sure the surrounding area has adequate ventilation.
A split system has a separate condensing unit and evaporator.
It can be a better option when you want the condenser positioned outside or away from the cold room.
Advantages include:
• Flexible installation
• Heat can be discharged away from the indoor area
• Suitable for larger or higher-demand cold rooms
• Condenser can be positioned separately
Split systems generally require installation by a refrigeration technician.
Before installing your walk-in chiller or freezer, consider:
• Stable electrical supply
• Proper drainage
• Level foundation or platform
• Adequate ventilation around refrigeration equipment
• Suitable space for servicing and maintenance
Common NZ electrical options include:
Single Phase: 230V / 50Hz
Three Phase: 400V / 50Hz
Optional equipment can also include digital temperature controls, remote monitoring and high-temperature alarms.
Walk-in cold rooms are suitable for many commercial and private applications throughout New Zealand, including:
• Butcher shops and butcheries
• Restaurants and cafés
• Commercial kitchens
• Supermarkets and grocery stores
• Food distributors
• Farms
• Hunters and game meat storage
• Meat and seafood businesses
• Dairy and cheese producers
• Food processing facilities
• Florists and flower storage
The correct refrigeration capacity should be selected based on the room dimensions, required temperature, products being stored and operating conditions.
Freezing Valley supplies walk-in chillers, freezers and refrigeration equipment throughout New Zealand.
Pickup locations: Auckland & Christchurch
Delivery can also be arranged to other locations throughout NZ. Please contact us with your delivery address for a freight quotation.
For installation, some flat-pack cold rooms can be assembled relatively easily using the panel cam-lock system. Refrigeration and electrical work should be completed by appropriately qualified technicians where required.
