The Difference Between a Chiller Room and a Freezer Room

1️⃣ Temperature Range

  • Chiller Room:

A chiller room maintains temperatures between 0°C and +10°C (32°F to 50°F). This temperature range is perfect for storing fresh produce, dairy, beverages, and other products that need to stay cool but not frozen.

  • Freezer Room:

A freezer room is designed to keep temperatures below -18°C (0°F). It’s ideal for storing frozen goods like meat, seafood, ice cream, and long-term bulk storage.

2️⃣ Main Purpose & Applications

  • Chiller Room:

Chiller rooms are mainly used to slow down bacterial growth and preserve the freshness of food for short to medium periods. You’ll find them in supermarkets, commercial kitchens, and restaurants for daily storage needs.

  • Freezer Room:

Freezer rooms are built for deep freezing, halting bacterial activity completely and preserving food for months. They’re essential for large-scale storage, export, and backup stock.

3️⃣ Construction Differences

  • Insulation:

While both rooms use insulation panels (like PU panels), freezer rooms typically require thicker panels (100mm or more) to handle the lower temperatures and prevent energy loss.

  • Doors & Seals:

Freezer room doors usually have better sealing and heated door frames to prevent ice buildup around the edges.

  • Defrost Systems:

Freezer rooms include defrost heaters or other features to prevent ice accumulation inside the evaporators, which isn’t always needed for chiller rooms.

4️⃣ Energy Use & Costs

Freezer rooms typically consume more energy because they operate at much lower temperatures and require more powerful compressors and insulation.

5️⃣ Choosing the Right Room for Your Needs

When deciding between a chiller or a freezer room, consider:

  • The type of product you’re storing

  • Your required storage time

  • Daily access and usage

  • Available space and budget

At Freezing Valley, we help clients design and build both chiller and freezer rooms tailored to their exact needs — whether it’s a small café or a large-scale cold storage warehouse.
